Night of (Alyssa’s) Angels Raises Funds
Over 300 people showed up on Friday at a fundraiser for a group which helps children with medical problems. “Alyssa’s Angels” is a non-profit organization raising money to help children and individuals with disabilities. Working with the individuals and their families, the mission is to help bring them a happier, healthier life.
The group was established in honor of 6-year-old Alyssa Cantaffa, who lives in West Long Branch and was afflicted with mental and physical handicaps after a battle at age three weeks with Pertussis (whooping cough) that almost took her life. Her courage has been an inspiration to her family, their friends and to all who have come to know Alyssa’s story.
The organization has broadened its original purpose to include all children, their families and individuals suffering from disabling illness. The funds raised are tax exempt and significant assistance has been given to children’s causes like that of a 2-year-old girl who has spinal bifida, who was helped with the cost of her braces. A donation of $1,500 was given to the “Michael’s Feat” center at Monmouth Medical Center. A young boy was comforted with a personal entertainment player to help him in his post-operation recovery from brain surgery.
On Friday night at Old Orchard Country Club, Monmouth Road, a dinner dance was attended by over 300 family members and friends to raise funds for Alyssa’s Angels. Donations were $75 per ticket, and monies were raised through auctions of gifts contributed to the cause. Gifts included a washer/dryer combination won by Rob and Mimi Cantaffa of West Long Branch. Another major win was a week’s stay in Key West won by Dr. and Mrs. Phillip Hanapole of Wayside.
The management at Old Orchard opened its door to the event, starting the night before to allow time to set up the DJ, banners, and tables filled with auction gifts from more than 100 givers. The event was scheduled to be over at 11. At midnight the crowd was beginning to leave. It was a successful happening.
